Overlooks, a famous ballad and a few steps of a 1,000-mile trail
In August 2021 we spent a day on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Wilkes County, North Carolina, stopping at overlooks and stretching our legs on the trails beside the road.
🥾 Betsey’s Rock Falls view
At milepost 267.8, a pull-off looks across the valley toward Betsey’s Rock Falls, a long series of cascades near the head of a creek. The falls are on private land with no trail, and are easiest to see in winter or after heavy rain.

🥾 The Lump and Tom Dula
At The Lump overlook (milepost 264.4), a National Park Service sign tells the story of Tom Dula, hanged in 1868 for the murder of his sweetheart and remembered in the ballad “Tom Dooley”. A short path climbs the grassy hill behind the sign to a wide view.

🥾 On the Mountains-to-Sea Trail
We also walked a short piece of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which crosses North Carolina from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smokies to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks. One sign we passed said Clingmans Dome was 317.2 miles away. We only needed 200 feet to the next overlook.
